There are four natural gas Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) in North Carolina. The four LDCs serve a total of 1,193,445 customers in North Carolina and have total annual revenues of $1.503 billion. These companies have experienced an average customer growth rate of approximately 2% annually over the past five years. The volume of natural gas sold in North Carolina in 2009 was 236,938,987 dekatherms (dts), a decrease of 0.4% compared to 2008.
Piedmont Natural Gas Company, Inc. (Piedmont) provides service to a total of 726,611 customers in the State of North Carolina. This includes approximately 62,000 customers of four municipalities served by Piedmont. Piedmont provides service in the piedmont area of the state, including Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem. Piedmont also provides natural gas service in eastern and south central North Carolina, and provides service in Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Gates, Chowan, Washington, Tyrrell, Dare, Hyde, Pamlico, Jones, Carteret, and Pender counties. Public Service Company of North Carolina, Inc. (PSNC) serves 465,796 customers in 26 counties in the piedmont and mountain areas of the state. The major cities served are Raleigh, Durham, Gastonia, and Asheville. PSNC’s headquarters are located in Gastonia. Phone: 1-877-776-2427
Frontier Natural Gas Company, LLC (Frontier) provides service to 1,082 customers in Surry, Wilkes, Yadkin, Watauga, Ashe, and Warren Counties. Frontier’s headquarters are located in Elkin. Phone: 336-526-2690 or 1-800-537-2545
Toccoa Natural Gas (Toccoa) provides service to 535 customers in and around Franklin in Macon County. Toccoa is a municipal corporation in the state of Georgia and serves nearly 8,000 customers, most of them in Georgia. Phone: 1-828-349-1222
Municipalities - There are eight municipalities that provide natural gas services to their residents. These municipalities are: the Cities of Bessemer City, Greenville, Kings Mountain, Monroe, Rocky Mount, Shelby, and Wilson. Municipalities are not regulated by the North Carolina Utilities Commission.
